It is always great to hear of young people inspiring change in others and urging them to stand up for a cause – and we love sharing stories of kids getting involved or even starting up a type 1 diabetes fundraiser.

Eddie Butterworth from Hallowell Elementary School seems to embody the kind of initiative we want all people to have – he wants to find a type 1 diabetes cure for his younger brother, and most importantly he wants to find one in his lifetime.

Eddie, who is 10 years old, participated in the JDRF Walk for a Cure, and advocates for diabetes awareness throughout his school, selling bracelets and paper sneakers. According to the school’s principle, Steven Glaize, Eddie has raised more than $500 at the school alone. At the JDRF walk, however, he and his 7-year old brother, Dylan, raised their total to more than $3,000.

It is fantastic that even young kids like Eddie realize that it is important to donate, but it also crucial to have goals and targets we want to achieve. Along with many other relatives and loved ones, he is advocating and rising money for diabetes so that his brother can see the direct benefits of these efforts in his lifetime.

This is why we need to unite and make sure that money donated for a cure goes specifically towards the research labs.  We need to set targets and keep up hopes that we will see a cure soon – it is even possible within the next 15 years if we launch a truly organized and focused effort.

Children like Eddie represent what we are all fighting for, and should remind us of what really matters. Let’s get together and make sure that Dylan, and the millions out there suffering from the disease, get a cure within our lifetime.
