An annual Walk to Cure Diabetes raises nearly $100,000 in West Virginia.
The 2012 state Walk to Cure Diabetes took place Sunday in Charleston at the State Capitol Complex.
This year’s theme was “Soaring for a Cure.”
The event raises awareness about juvenile diabetes and funds in hopes of finding a cure.
Organizers hope the event will change the lives of people dealing with diabetes, which impacts millions across the nation and here in the mountain state.
“It’s important for a number of reasons,” Jay Haapala, organizer of the event, said. “I mean, if you’re a diabetic you can come out and see people that support you and support the cause. If you’re not a diabetic, but maybe your brother, sister or some other family member has diabetes, you can come out and support them.”
Our own Courtney Clark served as master of ceremonies for the event.
Donations are still rolling in, but officials with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation said totals are already topping $90,000.
