The American Diabetes Association is looking for volunteers to help during the annual North Shore Tour de Cure cycling event on May 20 at the Pingree School in South Hamilton.

The cycling event is a fundraiser for the Diabetes Association.

A variety of positions are available throughout the day, including setup/cleanup, checking cyclists in, working at the start and finish lines, support services and helping at lunch.

Yoga for those with cancer

A yoga class for individuals living with cancer will be held on Saturday, May 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Yoga Center of Newburyport, 12 Maple St.

Free tai cheng class

Learn how to improve balance, flexibility and sports performance while gaining energy and releasing stress.

A free tai cheng class will be held next month at Natural High Fitness Club in Newburyport’s Tannery. Tai cheng is a blend of traditional Chinese martial arts with modern functional movement training.

Get dessert to benefit breast cancer research

During the week leading up to Mother’s Day, May 7 through May 13, two local restaurants will join in the Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer program.

Not Your Average Joe’s and Mission Oak Grill in Newburyport will create a unique dessert to include on the menu. The desserts start at $3 and proceeds will benefit breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Bakes for Breast Cancer Inc., a newly formed nonprofit breast cancer organization dedicated to making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

Port woman hosts fundraiser for rare disease tomorrow

Newburyport resident Lisa Furlong and her sister Jean Walsh of Haverhill are holding a “Spark Hope” cocktail party fundraiser tomorrow at Moraine Farm in Beverly to help fight the rare disease Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA). Walsh has FA, as does Furlong’s other sister.

FA strikes approximately 1 in 50,000. It attacks balance, coordination, speech, the spine and vital organs, as well as vision and hearing. The disease has no cure or known treatment.

The fundraiser will also include a challenge course experience for a small group of guests with FA and their family members at Moraine Farm’s Project Adventure course.

Diabetes lecture at Atria

Sheryl Duffy, a registered nurse from Home Health VNA, will give a lecture on diabetes awareness on Thursday, May 10, at 10 a.m. at Atria Merrimack Place, 85 Storey Ave., Newburyport. The public is invited to join this free lecture.

Nutrition seminar next month

The Groveland Council on Aging and the Groveland Cultural Council are sponsoring a free nutrition seminar, “The Longevity Secrets of the Okinawans” on Thursday at the Groveland Council on Aging from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

A district of Japan, Okinawa has the world’s highest population of centenarians (100 years of age or older).

Divorce support group in Amesbury

All Saints Anglican Church in Amesbury is hosting a DivorceCare seminar and support group on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30, beginning next week. Sessions will meet in the lower church hall. There is a small registration fee. Scholarships are available.
