Jwags said it. The “cure” was claimed on the basis that during the very short follow up period after surgery when the patient was on a reduced (seriously reduced) diet that would have taken his blood glucose down anyway, he showed a “normal blood glucose”.
Nothing was said about what happened after the follow up period and as has been mentioned, the risks of the surgery were nasty enough in themselves.
If that’s a “cure”, I’ll settle for my control method.
