Today I want to share a cool story with you guys.
A few days ago we posted an Ad on Craigslist looking for a web developer to update our old, crusty website ( a new one is coming soon now, we promise). As a non-profit, we told them that while we could pay them somewhat, we didn’t have the funds of a regular organization. Within 24 hours we had nearly 30 replies from people who wanted to do the work. We thought that was great in itself, but when we started to pick through the emails, we noticed something else.
Each one of them either had diabetes, or knew someone who did.
We had responses from people who had been diabetic for years, people who had small children that had recently been diagnosed, friends of diabetics, and distant relatives–all of whom wanted to help us because of their intimate connection with this disease. We were shocked. For a illness that rarely gets fanfare outside of a walk, it’s amazing to see all the people who are touched by it ( it’s also funny to see how many of them are web developers).
It just goes to show that we’re a larger community than given credit for, and an unbelievably caring, compassionate one.
And yes, consider this the kick-off to saying we’re going to have the website taken care of shortly, and we’ll hopefully be able to unveil it within a few weeks.
