stethoscopeNinety percent of people with type 2 diabetes are obese or overweight, according to the World Health Organization. It’s not surprising then, that many of those patients consider weight loss surgery as treatment for their weight problem and for diabetes. But is it the best treatment for either condition?

Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You?

Recent studies found that bariatric surgery resolved diabetes in over 86% of patients who underwent a procedure. Studies have also shown that patients with the least severe cases of the disease are most likely to see remission.

But the success of any weight loss surgery depends on the commitment of the patient. Regardless of the type of bariatric surgery you choose, you need to be ready for the significant lifestyle changes that must occur after surgery if the procedure is going to be successful.

And if you want the procedure to be paid for by insurance, most providers will need to see that you have tried traditional methods of weight loss in order for the surgery to be covered.

Does it seem like a lot of work? It is. But the investment into your health might be worth it. If you think surgery might be an option for you, begin by talking to your primary care provider. In most cases, you’ll get a referral to speak to a board certified surgeon who can recommend the best treatment for you.
