Some very interesting things are happening in Chicago today.
If you didn’t manage to check out the news before going to work, the Chicago teacher’s union has gone on strike following a breakdown in contract negotiations, and today not a single public school in the city is open. There are picket lines stretching city blocks, and mayor Rahm Emanuel is stuck between a rock and hard place–forced with ending the strike as quickly as possible while satisfying the teacher’s demands. If you haven’t read about it yet, I encourage to take a look at the developing story at some point during the day.
You may be wondering why I’m bringing this up, especially on a blog centered around diabetes and moving towards a Type 1 Cure. The reason I’m mentioning this story is because whether or not you agree with the strike, this is a perfect example of the power of a unified group.
Think about it. In only one day, a group of teachers has SHUT DOWN all education in an entire city. Thousands of professionals managed to join together and put things at a standstill. And keep in mind, this was literally decided last night, immediately after negotiations fell through.
There is something to be said about the strength of a united group, and what kind of change and transformation can come about when everyone is pulling in the same direction. That’s what we’re trying to do here at the JDCA–create a group and a voice powerful enough to influence the change we want. We’re growing at a steady rate, and we want to continue to expand to become loud enough for charities to stand up and take notice. Nothing can be accomplished with a “scattershot” approach, but when everyone joins together, amazing things can happen.
