Researchers from Duke University and Columbia University say diabetics can benefit from undergoing weight loss surgery. Weight is a factor in diabetes and can cause serious complications. Researchers worked to discover why patients who had some type of weight loss surgery had better results than patients who lost weight without surgery.

According to the study findings, patients who had the surgery had lower levels of amino acids. Amino acids have been linked with insulin resistance. The surgery is being credited with actually putting the diabetes into remission. Gastric-bypass patients were taken off diabetes medications a month following the surgery. Many of the patients who lost weight with diet and exercise remained on the diabetes medications.

Researchers say more studies are needed to determine the exact reason behind this phenomena. The findings of the study may lead to new diabetes treatments in the future.
