Brookfield Elementary will be holding the JDRF Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes on May 12th. One of the students at Brookfield Elementary lives with Type 1 Diabetes and in support of her and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), the school will raise money for a great cause.
Kids with Type 1 Diabetes must take multiple insulin injections daily or use an insulin pump, and test their blood sugar by pricking their finger 8-10 times per day. While insulin helps keep these kids alive, it is not a cure nor does it prevent its long-term effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, etc.
On April 21st, a representative from JDRF came to Brookfield Elementary to teach the students about diabetes and about making healthy diet and exercise choices. JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for diabetes and it’s complications. They are the world’s largest charitable funder and advocate of Type 1 Diabetes research worldwide. JDRF is responsible for more than $1billion in direct funding since it began. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It strikes children and adults suddenly, makes them insulin-dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.
All students will be able to participate in this charity Walk on May 12th and the Kids Helping Kids philosophy that is stressed during this event is a wonderful teaching opportunity.
If you would like to support the Kids Walk at Brookfield Elementary please send cash or checks payable to JDRF to Anne Brennan, Brookfield Elementary, 2530 North Brookfield Rd, Brookfield, WI 53045. Deadline to donate is May 12, 2011. To donate on-line or learn more about JDRF, please go to http://www.jdrf.org/kidswalk.
