One of the most successful diabetes fundraising events is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s “Walk To Cure Diabetes“,  which is famous for being promoted by teen star Nick Jonas, who has type 1 diabetes himself. According to the JDRF, this campaign alone raised $85 million in donations during 2010, and half a million people are expected to participate in the walks during 2011.

The campaign works because not only does it advertise a cure for type 1 diabetes, but it also promises that steps will be taken and distances will be traveled (hence the walking) until we get there. This kind of action-oriented strategy creates the idea that progress is being made and that we are heading in the right direction.

At the JDCA, we believe that even more people would be willing to donate money and do their part in the search for a cure if they were to have more reassurance that the money truly is going into the Practical Cure research labs – and that scientists have a defined goal they are pursuing and deadline to reach.  As successful as the campaigns are, we can help them raise even more money by demanding this level of focus and organization. The more people have a reason to trust and invest their money, and as long as it is benefiting Practical Cure research, the closer we will get to a cure.
