Now and then, questions to San Clemente Mayor Lori Donchak on her Mayor’s Blog aren’t about civic issues. Here’s a different kind of request with a very personal touch.

Dear Madam Mayor:

Article Tab: Aubrey Johnston, left, plans to walk with her friend Faith Gilman, right, on Nov. 6 in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. Faith has juvenile diabetes.

As you may or may not know, on Nov. 6 there is a juvenile diabetes function going on called “Walk for a Cure.” My daughter Aubrey is “Walking for Faith.”

Her 9-year-old friend, Faith, a fellow San Clemente resident, has juvenile diabetes that she struggles with every day. We have witnessed firsthand just a few of these challenges that this sweet and courageous little girl deals with daily. For example, not being able to eat cake and ice cream with the other little girls at a birthday party or not having a snack during a Brownie Girl Scout meeting, and difficult-to-manage blood-sugar levels when left with a babysitter for just a short while, and hospitalization for flu last year.

SEE A PREVIOUS STORY HERE.

She faces this life-threatening disease so bravely, and her mother does the same with so much grace, that they are truly an inspiration. They have participated with friends and family each year in the JDRF walk in an effort to raise money toward finding a cure. I sure would appreciate you announcing this to the community to help with donations.

Even the smallest donation toward their goal is helpful. The link to the local San Clemente JDRF team site is walkingwithfaith.us.org. The walk is Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at UC Irvine. Here is a link to the map for directions: walkingwithfaith.us.org/JDRF_UCI.pdf. The team has almost hit their goal of raising $5,000, so hopefully your article will help get them over the top.

Dear Brian.

This looks like a very worthwhile cause. Please congratulate your daughter Aubrey for taking an active role in making a positive difference in Faith and others’ lives.

Let’s post your message on the blog so interested people can join with Aubrey to find a cure for juvenile diabetes.
