Day 3. Eliminate Sugary Drinks
Great news! I don’t drink sugary drinks. Bad news is I drink diet soda and diet teas which are loaded with artificial sweeteners. So I decided to drink only water and tea.
Water was easy; I was already on that regimen, drinking half my weight in ounces every day. So I bought three teas: Organic Green Tea, Oolong Tea and Yerba Matte Greener Tea and started drinking 2 to 3 cups of it a day.
For dinner I had some grilled chicken and drank water with it instead of my usual Diet Coke. It was not an awesome thing for me. Drinking water with grilled chicken was like eating prison food. But it didn’t matter. I figured that if I ate or drank something that tasted good but was not healthy, I would suffer the negative effects for perhaps years! But, if I ate or drank something that didn’t tickle my fancy but was good for me, well I could tolerate the lack of taste for the health benefits that will last a lifetime. This was all part of my rationalization…and it worked. I know I enjoy water with ever meal…either that or coffee…speaking of which.
I drank my coffee with cream and Splenda or Equal for YEARS. I loved coffee, but I hate it black. So when I decided to embark on this program, I intended to give up coffee. If I couldn’t have it with cream and sweetener, I didn’t want it. Well, that lasted 2 days before I tried a hot black coffee. YUCK! But I drank it. And I drank another and after about 5 I started liking the plain bitterness. Then I tried it iced and I am hooked! And coffee, up to 5 cups a day is awesome for diabetics (as I learned in the book)!!
By the end of day three I was starting to get over my cravings for sweets. I was also down to about 5 units of Humalog a day and zero Lantis! And overall my blood sugar was coming way down; in the low 100s without any insulin!
