Our last report, “Treatment Innovations Have Not Derived From The Non-Profits” discussed how the diabetes charity foundations and commercial enterprises work on different levels and have different goals when it comes to improving the lives of diabetics.
It is important to note, however, that the JDCA is fully committed to supporting the foundations in their search for a cure. We believe they have the resources, dedication, passionate supporters and talented researchers at hand to find a cure for type 1 diabetes within our lifetime.
That is why it is a bit disconcerting when our reports show that most of the money that is raised (mainly through cure messaging at fundraising events) is used for treatments, management and general studies rather than a cure itself. We believe that this approach divides efforts and fails to be as effective as it could be if the money was to be focused precisely on the area that the donors want it to be focused on– a cure.
Simply put, we believe in the potential that the diabetes charities have to find a cure and change the lives of millions of people worldwide. Diabetes affects so many people out there, and a cure would create sweeping changes to the entire industry; we cannot understate how many complications and daily struggles it would solve.
That can only happen, though, if the foundations focus their efforts in the direction of a Practical Cure. Not treatments, other research, or idealized cure projects that simply exist in theory and have little hope of becoming reality. We need to see a new initiative from these organizations, a new focused approach that will make the best use of all the money they collect from fundraisers. We cannot be satisfied with anything less.
