Greensboro, NC – Is it true? Is there a cure for Type 2 Diabetes? Researchers in Britain say you can get rid of it by restricting your diet to only 600 calories a day.
The doctors gave the patients three shakes, and non-starchy vegetables totaling 600 calories for two months. In the end, eleven patients lost weight and none of them showed signs of Diabetes.
So that got us talking in the newsroom. How can you live on 600 calories, when most of us eat between 1200 1800 a day?
Maggie May with the Cone Health Nutrition and Diabetes Management Center showed us what a 600 calorie plate of food looks like on the Good Morning Show.
For this example, May used a cup or green beans, a cup of broccoli with cheese, a cup of mashed potatoes, a 4.5 ounce piece of chicken and a 3.5 ounce roll. But here’s the catch, you could only eat that one plate a day. May says though the diet works, it’s not healthy.
“In the study those individuals were closely monitored. When you start narrowing the numbers of calories you start having the risk of developing electrolyte unbalance. A 600 calorie diet is not the safe way to go on your own,” said May.
May doesn’t recommend anyone trying to lose weight try the diet, but noted the study’s results are already making the rounds among professionals.
