I will not lie, when you write about a niche topic such as diabetes it is hard to think of ideas every day. I enjoy writing, it is cathartic and my hope is that many others are getting something out of it as well. That being said, when I need ideas, I will sometimes google search for news items related to diabetes. I would love for my articles to pop up in SEO results but the woman who is addicted to tanning is not diabetic, alas.
In my search I found an article about a woman who was obese and had bariatric surgery to aid in her weight loss. She was also a diabetic she may still be the article does not mention. Why I question it is because the article talks of an 80% success rate in reversing diabetes. From what I have seen this has only been the case in type 2. So as a type 1 and someone who does not need to lose weight a quick fix is out of the question.
So I suppose I am stuck sticking myself with syringes. I was trying for a bit of alliteration there. I am always questioning diabetes reversal. I have seen many “doctors” claim they have a diet that not only reverses diabetes but will cure it as well. You would think if this was the case my doctor would let me in on the info. Wait she would not get paid, never mind, she is totally keeping me in the dark.
I will be honest my skepticism has kept me from looking deeply into these claims but maybe it is worth it if only as a way to control my diabetes. Bariatric surgery like any surgery has the possibility of complications and with diabetes those possibilities increase. Diabetics take longer to heal. It is a big reason why my doctor would not use surgery to fix my broken foot. He wanted to see it heal on its own.
It is well on its way but he did tell me it would be swollen for the better part of a year as it heals. I am just happy it is piecing itself back together. Anyway, I do not know if I would want the surgery even if it cured diabetes. I know it sounds weird but there is no way of knowing the long term effects or if diabetes comes back later in life. For now I will stick to insulin and monitoring and snacking on lettuce.
