Five thousand people marched in Reno Sunday to find a cure for type I diabetes.
“I woke up in the ER and the doctor told me… I’m lucky to be alive,” one diabetic said.
Another said all he remembers of his diagnosis is “riding in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.”
The walk is an annual event raising awareness and funds for research. Diabetics are at risk for serious complications and must constantly monitor.
“You do what you need to do and you don’t let it slow you down,” Alina Jackson, a type I diabetic, said.
Though the event is held for a serious cause, many attended in costume to meet the Reno Aces mascot and see a cheerleader performance.
