After receiving his Ph.D. from Kansas State University and his Psy.D. from Wright State University’s School of Professional Psychology, Dr. Robert L. Suiter began a career providing mental-health services to members of the military, particularly the U.S. Air Force, and their families. Dr. Robert Suiter began his work as a mental-health provider at Irwin Army Hospital in Ft. Riley, Kansas, where he served as a Psychiatric Nurse Clinician.
He then became the Program Director of the Inpatient Mental Health Unit at Dettmer Hospital in Troy, Ohio, before joining the Air Force in 1984 for his residency. Appointed as the Chief of Mental Health Services at California’s Edwards Air Force Base in 1986, Dr. Robert L. Suiter conducted more than a thousand Commander Directed Evaluations, helping the Air Force to judge fitness for service through his work on its Discharge Evaluation Boards and Sanity Panels. Dr. Robert L. Suiter subsequently held the same position at Guam’s Anderson Air Force Base and the 22nd Strategic Hospital at California’s March Air Force Base.
In addition to his work with soldiers, Dr. Robert L. Suiter also worked with many of the children, spouses, and other family members of military personnel, treating conditions ranging from depression and bipolar disorder to substance abuse and addiction. Over 200 hours of child-psychology internship experience allowed Dr. Robert Suiter to work with children and adolescents. He later completed another 100 hours of postdoctoral child-psychology training at UCLA.
After founding his own practice in 1989, Dr. Robert L. Suiter began transitioning from military mental health, building his reputation as a practitioner while remaining somewhat involved with the armed forces. As the Regional Director of the Resource Sharing Project, which aims to place civilian practitioners in military mental-health settings, Dr. Robert Suiter was responsible for 25 mental-health providers at six military institutions. He also served for two years as the Clinical Director of March Air Force Base’s Adolescent Mental Health Unit. Today, Dr. Robert L. Suiter operates exclusively in clinical practice, focusing on psychological assessments with a specialty in forensic evaluations.
