D-Blog Day, which is dedicated to blogs and bloggers about diabetes, was yesterday, but I didn’t want to miss out on sharing my story and contributing to the DOC.

As an English major and someone who has been writing on one thing or another for most of my life, it was actually surprising to me when I realized this summer that I had never written a single word about diabetes. I was diagnosed five years ago at 18 years of age, but never really thought about sharing my experiences or really participating in anything having to do with my condition. I love writing fiction, which offers an escape from the problems in life – the last thing I wanted to do back then was to spend any more time focusing on diabetes.

However, when I saw the opportunity to join the JDCA in the summer, I started looking at blogging in a different light. I did not want to write blogs or articles about how much my condition sucked;  instead, I wanted to focus on something positive. Reaching out to others with the same condition, and getting people on board in the search for a cure has been a source of great motivation for me. I have learned a lot of new things from others, I have learned where exactly we are in the search for a cure, and what we need to do to speed the process up.

Writing is a powerful tool – and so is everyone joining together for a common cause. When there are enough of us writing and advocating for the same cause, people in power will listen. Anyone and everyone can do their part – and it can start as simple as setting up your own diabetes blog.
