Diabetic Research

There is currently no cure for diabetes, even though it can be treated. there are many organizations, such as the American Diabetes Association (ADA), which fund research programs for diabetes in the hopes of finding a cure, as well as finding information that leads to the prevention and better treatment of diabetes.

In fact, the ADA spends approximately $50 million per year on diabetes research. the National Institutes of Health (NIH) also conducts diabetes research, and often the two organizations work together. When potential breakthroughs are found, normally grants are secured through the U.S. federal government for more extensive research.

Researchers are typically looking at things such as genetics, immunology, and islet cell biology in the search for better treatment and a cure for diabetes. recent studies have found that having gastric bypass surgery — for those who are extremely obese — has a very fast effect on insulin levels in those with diabetes. further research is required to substantiate this, however.

Research has also discovered that smoking increases the risk of hypoglycemia if you have Type 1 diabetes. Studies have also shown that proper treatment of gestational diabetes is the key to decreasing the chances of the child becoming overweight or diabetic.

Diabetic research is conducted all over the world, and subjects usually either have diabetes, or are predisposed to developing diabetes. These tests are vital if a cure is to ever be found, and this research has also contributed to making it easier to treat and control diabetes as well. there are also ongoing clinical trials for medications designed to control diabetes.

If you are diabetic, or at high risk of becoming diabetic, talk to your doctor about recent or upcoming research, or contact the ADA to find out how you can participate in upcoming studies. Everyone should be involved in the fight to find a cure for diabetes.
