Our latest blog post for T1 Diabetes Cure- Global Headquarters:
Happy Monday! Can you believe it’s July already?
For today’s blog post, we are going to take a first look into the JDCA’s latest report, “How Do the Major Type 1 Non-Profits Rate on Corporate Governance Issues?”
This report analyzes how well the non-profits inform donors on four key corporate governance areas, including financial data, strategic direction, cure progress, and enterprise governance.
As a reminder, the JDCA has published a series of corporate governance reports. We believe that SEC guidelines for reporting timeliness and disclosure for small public companies are an appropriate benchmark for the four major diabetes non-profits based on their size and their dependence on donor contributions. Over the past several years, these major non-profits have raised considerable donations, ranging from several million dollars to over $200 million. Their donor base comprises people passionate about improving the lives of diabetics and their families. Our current report analyzes the quality of the non-profits’ communications with the supporters who are invested in their mission.
We believe that more rigorous corporate governance practices (more timely notifications, greater transparency, and improved communications with donors about what research projects their money is funding) will increase management’s accountability and could ultimately result in the faster development of a type 1 cure.
How did we rate the non-profits?
The ratings were the compilation of four measures, including transparency, consistency, timeliness, and thoroughness. These ratings are a measure of how well the donor receives information, updates, and access to information. Ratings were not influenced by the degree to which the JDCA is in agreement with the non-profits’ operating strategy or mission.
Findings:
- Overall, the non-profits do a great job of communicating their mission statements and a solid job of financial data presentation in their Financial Statements.
- However, our research shows that donors are not well informed for the categories of enterprise governance, financial performance, goal setting, cure research strategies, and cure progress.

We will continue to break down the report in daily blogs here at JDCA2025 over the next few days.
