The type 1 diabetes donor is a very important factor of the diabetes community, as we discussed yesterday and without the donors who dedicate their time and money to helping with fundraisers, the major foundations would not be able to function.
But besides the great work that donors already do, what else can they have to do to make sure that their efforts are going towards the cause (a type 1 diabetes cure) that they advocate for?
One of the most important things is simply to ask questions. Make sure you are aware of where the charity money is going and what purpose it is being used for. Specifically, ask about the projects that the fundraisers will support. What kind of research is being done? Is is specifically focused on a cure? Is there a deadline or progress report? Do you feel hopeful that these projects have the potential to achieve a cure in the near future?
Another very useful strategy for being a smart donor is reviewing the annual reports of the charity to track progress and see what projects are being conducted. Check through their website, read news articles and press releases, review the JDCA reports – the more information you have at your disposal, the more aware you will be.
Attaching our Donor Action Letter and making your voice heard is an easy but crucial step in the fundraising process. When the foundations receive your money, they will also be given a stipulation – that the donation be used to fund research projects focused on a Practical Cure for type 1 diabetes with a set deadline.
Join the Alliance and help us reach people with type 1, family and friends. We are gearing up for some more action initiatives and we need to make sure we have participation and support.
