As most know, the four biggest diabetes foundations are the JDRF, the ADA, DRIF and Joslin.

But where should you as a donor put your hard earned money? Which are the best organizations to give resources to, if any?

The JDCA recommends that donors ask themselves a few important questions before making their decision.

If we want to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, we must make sure that the money we are giving is going exactly for that purpose.

The most important thing is to make any donation, no matter to whom it is, have that stipulation – JDCA’s Donor Action Letter is a good example of a requirement that can be attached to one’s donation. It ensures that your intentions are recognized – because simply giving money to a fundraisers does not place any responsibility on the shoulders of foundations. We need to encourage them if they are to adapt a more focused approach towards a  type 1 diabetes cure.

In terms of determining where to spend the money, a few important questions to ask yourself include:

§ What treatments/advancements has your institution or grant projects made in the last 10 years?

§ What projects will my donation fund?

§ Do you have a timeline for these projects and benchmarks that need to be achieved?

Unfortunately, sometimes it is hard to immediately find this information.

This is where the JDCA steps in.  Our reports seek to analyze the spending methods of these organizations and determine how each is progressing towards the search for a type 1 cure. An excellent way to get yourself informed is by checking out our brief but informative Publications, (especially Industry Expense Models) and subscribing to our free newsletter by joining our Alliance.
