At the JDCA we often point out that instead of using cure-donated money to focus on the search for a type 1 diabetes cure, the major foundations, like the JDRF, DRIF, Joslin and ADA use the majority of their funding to research new forms of treatments for diabetics.

That is already a big problem, considering they are not using the money the way the donors want them to, but JDCA’s newest report – Type 1 Treatment Innovations Have Not Derived From the Non-Profits has uncovered that the major innovations, when it comes to treatments in the field, have been derived from commercial enterprises, and not non-profits.

  1. Rapid-Acting Human Insulin Analogue (Humalog)—1996 by Eli Lilly1
  2. Professional Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Systems—1999 by Minimed2
  3. Long-Acting Insulin Analogue (Lantus)—2000 by Aventis Pharmaceuticals3
  4. Integrated Insulin Pump and CGM Technology—2006 by Medtronic4
  5. Insulin Pump and CGM with Low Glucose Suspend (outside the US)—2009 by 5 Medtronic

The above list are five of the biggest innovations in diabetes treatments developed since 1995 – and there are no non-profits on that list. Make sure to read our full report which analyzes in detail exactly what these results mean.

This is not to say that the major foundations are not doing important work – but this report is further proof that they strongly need to reconsider their course of action and how they spend the donor money. Commercial enterprises are well equipped and capable of developing treatments – the non-profits should focus on the most important task at hand, and the reason why most people give them money – to find a Practical Cure for type 1 diabetes within our lifetime.

This report is important information to know because it highlights what is and what is not working in the diabetes industry today. Commercial enterprises and non-profits are different, and their best efforts are focused on different areas. We need to join together to make sure the search for a cure is not forgotten in the shuffle.
