Yesterday we introduced our latest report, and mentioned that only around 10% of current clinical trials are actually focused on a type 1 diabetes cure. It is little wonder then that we are not where we want to be in the search for a cure. The report: http://www.thejdca.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Type-1-Human-Clinical-Trials.pdf

Of the 35 clinical trials currently underway that we have listed, (In Exhibit A), none of them target a date near 2025. While the JDCA does not advocate that researchers make false promises they can not live up to, we still need to see a change and adapt a more focused initiative towards the search for a cure. It simply does not help anyone to continue with the type of broad and undefined research that we see currently. Not to mention that a lot of the trials that claim that they are working on a type 1 cure are either aiming both for type 1 and type 2, or are focused more on prevention than on a cure. And all this while using money donated by people specifically for the search for a type 1 cure. That is simply not fair to the people walking the walks and contributing their resources.

Mr. Joshua Levy helped us come up with the list of clinical trials in our report with a type 1 cure in mind – read more about him on his blog here: http://cureresearch4type1diabetes.blogspot.com/

Although the 35 out of 330 clinical trials statistic is small enough, the majority even of those may very well never lead to a cure, since they are geared more towards preventing diabetes than helping people with established type 1 diabetes.

This report means that we still have a long way to go before we are on the right track for a cure. It is simply unacceptable that so few trials are focused on one – but just imagine how far we can reach if we can get at least 50 percent to be actively perusing a Practical Cure. By making informed choices about where to donate money and by making sure the foundations know we want them to use the money for focused research – we can make that change. Most of all, we need to stand together as an Alliance.
