The Katy City Council has given final approval to the American Diabetes Association’s Second Annual Tour de Cure bicycle event, scheduled for Sept. 22 at Champion Nissan near Katy Mills Mall.

Approval came during Monday’s city council meeting.

In requesting council approval, Elizabeth Sian, the event’s logistics director, said the ride will help provide the Katy community with life-saving diabetes information and screening.

“Tour de Cure is the only ride in Texas dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes,” Sian said in making the request.

Sian also said someone is diagnosed with the disease every 21 seconds and, if current trends continue, one in three children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

“The support of Tour de Cure will bring increased awareness of the disease to the community, as well as encouragement to all residents affected by the disease,” Sian noted.

This year’s event will include five different ride routes, including a 10 mile family route and 27-, 47-, 64- and 100-mile rides. Each route will begin and end at Champion Nissan.

City council approved the event on a unanimous vote.
