HAMDEN — The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Greater New Haven is looking for schools interested in participating in the “Kid’s Walk to Cure Diabetes” program this spring.
Funds raised by this program benefit diabetes research.
There are more than 15,000 children diagnosed with diabetes each year. This condition affects their ability produce the necessary insulin on their own needed to survive, without the help from shots or an insulin pump, and the cause is unknown.
With 40 children diagnosed daily, chances are there are children in almost every community and almost every school with type 1 diabetes.
The Kid’s Walk program is meant to teach young students about type 1 diabetes and raise money for research to find a cure.
The program gives students an opportunity to help children affected by diabetes, but it also gives them an opportunity to raise money for their school.
JDRF staff and volunteers will present information through a kickoff assembly, where students will be taught about diabetes, healthy living, and exercise, as well as ideas on how to fundraise.
Two weeks later, a walk can be held at the school or in the community.
The length of the walk can be determined by the school, and can be done indoors or outdoors.
Not only do the students get the satisfaction of helping other children, but the participating schools receive a check for 10 percent of all money raised. And the school will also receive a banner to display as a thank-you. Students also get a chance to earn prizes.
JDRF takes care of everything from collecting the money to running the walk.
