More than 4,000 area walkers — including Davis and Woodland families, schools, local corporations and organizations — are expected to turn out for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s 18th annual Walk to Cure Diabetes from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the state Capitol.
Radio DJs Baltazar and Nina from NOW 100.5FM will kick off the event along with local mascots Dinger of the Sacramento River Cats, Thor of the Stockton Thunder, Gunrock of UC Davis and Smokey the Bear, who will lead walkers in their quest to raise $400,000 for research to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes (formerly called juvenile diabetes) and its complications.
Diabetes kills one American every three minutes, and costs California’s health care system $12 billion annually, according to Victoria Webster, executive director of the Northern California Inland Chapter of JDRF.
Marshalls and REI are selling Walk “Sneakers” for $1 each to raise money for JDRF. For more information, visit www.jdrf.org or contact the Northern California Inland Chapter at (916) 920-0790 or northernca@jdrf.org.
