We have released a new report at the JDCA that discusses exactly why we need to unite and change things now. As much as we promote hope for finding a cure, there are rich and powerful forces working directly against finding one, and they are aligned with some of the very foundations that donors give money to.

Some people believe that the diabetes community should be focusing more on developing treatments rather than chasing an unlikely cure – but our latest report outlines who such an approach benefits – the diabetes industry. This industry makes millions of dollars providing and selling diabetes products, and thus has no interest whatsoever in developing a cure. They have legal obligations to produce financial returns for their investors. Their motives and goals are simply incongruous with nonprofits searching for a cure.
In fact, a cure would be severely detrimental to the commercial enterprises that sometimes partner with non-profit organizations. Their main objective is not to help diabetics or to listen to the wishes of diabetes donors, it is to maximize profits for their shareholders. If they are partnered with the major diabetes foundations, how can we ever expect to see a cure? Allocating less money toward cure research is bad enough, but when there is an influence that directly contradicts the search for a cure, it is no surprise that despite all the money we pour in, no real progress is being made.
There are hard-working people searching for a cure and there are exciting medical advancements – but none of that matters if the people who are working toward a cure are aligned with such commercial enterprises. None of the Walks for a Cure, Rides for a Cure or any of the other fundraisers matter if we do not make sure that non-profits stay true to their cause and act independently in the name of the donors.
It is a harsh reality, but one we need to be aware of if we want to spark some real change.
