Skype is no magic bullet for bridging the urban-rural divide in diabetes care, research suggests, with technological teething problems hampering its uptake for video consults.
US researchers are turning to the web-based teleconferencing service to conduct consultations with geographically isolated teens with type 1 diabetes who are struggling with their glycaemic control.
In a randomized trial, they have so far assigned 80 teenagers to receive either their usual check-ups at a regional clinic in Portland, Oregon, or to have home-based Skype teleconsults
