Some good news coming from the American Diabetes Association annual meeting concerned three observational studies that showed no increased risk of cancer in type 1 diabetes patients who used insulin in the long-term.
The complications that come with this disease are many, and the risk of cancers has been the worry of some people, though this study, which compiled analysis of data from five European countries, found no increased risk of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer over 3 years for patients using human insulin. The study was conducted by the International Prevention Research Institute in Lyon, France, Medical News reported. Another similar U.S. study found no increased risk in short-term usage as well.
The report goes into a detailed analysis, looking at how the statistics correspond to the studies done in previous years, but all of the results suggested that diabetes patients do not have to fear cancer, at least not due to continued insulin usage.
This is great news, of course, and at least gives us some reassurance that insulin usage does not create an increased risk of cancer.
Unfortunately, there were no highlights in cure progress. What this tells us is that advocating for a better future for diabetics is really up to us, the people with the condition and others passionate for a cure. We have to be the vocal advocates, and we can not wait any longer if we want to see a cure for type 1 diabetes within our lifetime.
