(SIESTA KEY BEACH, SARASOTA, Fla., Mar. 2011) – Tie up your shoe laces and get ready to Walk to Cure Diabetes! The Florida Suncoast Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is hosting its annual Walk to Cure Diabetes to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes and its complications.
The 5k walk’s theme is “The Greatest Walk on Earth” and will be at Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Fla. Mar. 26 and will begin at 8am (starting at the picnic area south of the Pavilion). The 2011 event include plenty of delicious food, fun and entertainment for people of all ages.
Dr. Arthur M. Guilford, Regional Chancellor of USF Sarasota-Manatee and 2011 Corporate Chairman for the walk, said he is “impressed that through JDRF’s local walk, 94 cents of every dollar raised, directly supports research and research-related education.” Guilford also hopes USF Sarasota-Manatee’s partnership with JDRF and support of the Walk to Cure Diabetes will accelerate the pace of research, delivery of treatments and discovery of a cure for people with type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and can be fatal. Everyday, people with type 1 diabetes constantly test blood glucose levels and inject themselves with insulin shots to stay alive. Even insulin is not a cure for diabetes, which is why people like the 3,000 expected walkers are participating in the 2011 Walk to Cure Diabetes and raising money and awareness for diabetes research.
JDRF is an organization dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research. To know more about diabetes or the Walk to Cure Diabetes, call (941) 907-0811, visit www.jdrf.org/chapters/FL/Sarasota-Manatee or email hparker@jdrf.org.
