Thousands of people across Canada took a walk Sunday afternoon to raise money for diabetes research.
In Regina, 800 participants walked 5 kilometres around Wascana Lake in the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes.
Last year, over $7.5 million was raised for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) across the country. This year, JDRF hopes to improve that number to $7.9 million.
A few distinguished guests participated in the walk around Wascana. Regina-Wascana M.P Ralph Goodale, Toronto Maple Leaf forward Tyler Bozak, and Saskatchewan Roughrider Rob Bagg all helped raise money and awareness for diabetes research.
A number of student athletes from the Notre Dame Hounds were in attendance. One of them was Evan Last, who plays for the Midget AAA Hounds. He was participating in the walk because his roommate has diabetes.
“You see how many needles he has to put in himself, and how many times he has to prick his fingers,” he said.
Last is impressed by his friend’s athletic talents despite his diabetes.
After participants completed their trek, a BBQ was held.
