The International Diabetes Federation’s (IDF) World Diabetes Congress is still a few months away (scheduled for December 4-9, 2011), but we already know of one very interesting project that is going to present its latest findings on a search for a cure for type 1 diabetes.
The research stems from a combined effort between The Sanford Project, a clinical research initiative, and DiaMedica, a biopharmaceutical company, whose lead compound, DM-199, represents a novel approach for dealing with diabetes.
You can read the article that goes into more detail about the findings here: Market Watch (including links to the Stanford Project website)
What is interesting is that the research has found advancements in immune therapy, beta cell therapy and glucose control, which are all critical areas of type 1 diabetes.
As we near the date of the congress, hopefully we will be coming across more and more of these findings. While we can not allow ourselves to get too excited – anyone who follows diabetes research news knows how many potential cure projects like these come and go, we also can not allow to ignore any possibility that we may have found the next big breakthrough.
In any case, interesting times are ahead.
