There are many reasons why we should focus for a cure for type 1 diabetes instead of investing more money into treatments – but one of the biggest ones is that a cure is the only way to eliminate the dangers and side effects of diabetes. Sometimes, no matter how well you believe you have your condition controlled, diabetes can still lead to many difficulties – proof of which is a recent study on young children with the condition.
Published in the medical journal Sleep, the findings revealed that even children with well controlled diabetes have sleep disorders.
“Despite adhering to recommendations for good diabetic health, many youth with Type 1 diabetes have difficulty maintaining control of their blood sugars… We found that it could be due to abnormalities in sleep, such as daytime sleepiness, lighter sleep and sleep apnea. All of these make it more difficult to have good blood sugar control,” said Michelle Perfect, PhD, the principal investigator of the study.
Parents of children with type 1 experience many sleepless nights worrying about their kids, and constantly monitor them to make sure their blood sugar levels are under control and they are well. This study helps explain; however, why sleeping is a problem, and unfortunately treatments and better care can only do so much when you are dealing with a chronic disease.
Many other diabetes complications which only a cure can address make it imperative that we fight for one now.
