GREENVILLE, N.C. – People around eastern Carolina took a lot of steps today to fight a disease that strikes millions of Americans.

They put on their shoes for a walk at the Greenville Convention Center to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

People with Type 1 are not able to produce any insulin on their own, unlike the more common Type 2.

More than 25 million Americans have some form of the disease.

About a thousand people showed up to raise more than a $150,000.

“It’s a lot of fun to watch families come out because it’s a fun day.  Having diabetes is not a fun thing because they stick their fingers at least four times a day and take as many insulin shots or have to have insulin pumps,” said Annette Peery, organizer of the walk.  “So [it’s great] to know that all these people are out here, they’re having fun, but we’re also raising money to fund research to find a cure so they don’t have to live on their life support of insulin anymore.”

Today’s proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
