One of the top news stories concerning diabetes in the past month has been the high-profile UN Summit on non-communicable diseases that was held last week in New York. While President Obama failed to attend, there were 30 heads of State and Government and around 100 senior ministers that were present. The meeting addressed the rising number of people living with non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory disease and proposed strategies to tackle the problem.
Unfortunately, information is vague on what, if any, specific goals and expectations were set for tackling the situation head on. One of the plans discussed was to challenge the unhealthy foods marketed to children and encourage them to eat a more healthy diet, which is certainly not a bad idea, but does little to address concerns for people currently living with diabetes and other diseases.
The UN article, which you can read here: http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=39600Cr=non+communicable+diseases contains a lot of inspirational phrases and calls for action, but as always, there is a big difference between words and actually setting focused goals where people will be held accountable.
Still, it is good that the summit raised awareness and got some media coverage, but the real work remains to be be done.
