In May 2010, Kaleigh Buckminster, daughter of Taylor and Joy Buckminster, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

After almost losing their daughter, the couple founded Enid Walk to Cure Diabetes to raise money and awareness for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The first Enid Walk to Cure Diabetes was held on March 26, 2011, downtown and raised $18,000 to donate to JDRF.

“Not only did it raise an amazing amount of money to help fund the research required to help find the cure for diabetes, it also brought families affected by diabetes in northwest Oklahoma one step closer to the cure,” Joy Buckminster said. “It was very exciting to see so many people join together to help support these children and their families.”

The 2012 Enid Walk to Cure Diabetes is geared toward bringing even more awareness to the community and raising more money for JDRF.

The 2012 Enid Walk to Cure Diabetes will be May 19 at the Garfield County Court House lawn.

Several activities are planned for the event.

There will be a DG Productions chip-timed 5K run/walk beginning at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Registration fee for the run is $25, which includes a shirt and participation medal.

Awards will be given for the top three overall race winners and for the three age-division winners for both men and women.

The opening ceremony will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the ceremonial Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Also planned for the day is a “Smash Diabetes” car demolition, moonwalks, jousting, face painting, silent auction, Army Hummer, and music.

Colorful Walk to Cure Diabetes shirts, visors, water bottles, and bracelets will be available to purchase.
