People were walking for a cure in downtown Roanoke today.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations Walk to Cure Diabetes started at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Walkers could choose either a one mile or a 2.5 mile stroll through downtown.

“There’s more and more people being diagnosed with diabetes every day,” said Charlotte Kidd of the Greater Blue Ridge Chapter. “We learn about new people every week. And so the dollars that we’re raising today will go to research to find a cure.”

More than 1,300 people pre-registered for the event, and the Greater Blue Ridge Chapter hoped to raise more than one million dollars at the walk.
