Type one diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, which is a hormone that enables us to get energy from our food. It can strike adults at anytime, and at any age, causing dependence on injected or pumped insulin for the rest of their life. Currently there is no cure for type one diabetes, but the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or JDRF,  is fighting to find one.

Jolene Loetscher, with South Dakota’s chapter of the JDRF joined us Friday morning to tell us how we can help find a cure for this disease.

One way to help is to come to the Empire Mall on Saturday, January 28 for the JDRF Walk To Cure Diabetes. This year 3,000 are expected to turn out. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m.

If you haven’t registered there is still time by going to jdrf.org/southdakota.

KDLT’s Phil McIlrath will be a host emcee for the walk so come out and say hello!
