More and more people are taking the route of weight loss surgery to fight many ailments. This includes women who undergo the knife to increase their chances to conceive and others who take it to fight and cure high blood sugar level.
Meanwhile a group of researchers from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio have discovered that frequent usage of diet soda may boost your body weight. In the light of the study, the researchers have warned the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions drinking diet soda will only increase body weight and cause Type 2 diabetes.
The study that was not much scientific and broader has revealed that there is a 70 percent increase in body weight with the diet soda drinkers from non-drinkers.
The percent is high at 500 when the frequent (daily) diet soda drinkers are taken into account, the researchers said. Their study has not been published and peer-reviewed, however.
“Data from this and other prospective studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas as healthy alternatives may be ill-advised: they may be free of calories, but not of consequence,” says the research’s abstract.
The study result is quite interesting anyway. It means that people who used to take much of diet soda should beware of their body weight gain. However, more tests need to validate the study, which was conducted using only around 500 participants.
“These results suggest that heavy aspartame exposure might potentially directly contribute to increased blood glucose levels, and thus contribute to the associations observed between diet soda consumption and the risk of diabetes in humans,” comments Dr. Gabriel Fernandez, a University of Texas professor under the light of the new study.
