As we at the JDCA are gearing up to expand our alliance membership and reach out to more people, we want to remind everyone just how important it is to stand united for a cause, such as finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. Most diabetics share common goals, such as the desire to spread awareness about the disease, help others and fight for better lives for patients, but if our voices are spread apart, we will not really have the opportunity to spark significant change. Big organizations only listen to big numbers.
If we work together, however, we can build a united and powerful voice for a cure, we can influence foundations and get them to concentrate funds and donor contributions towards a cure and we can let them know that we want more transparency and accountability in the way they distribute the money they receive.
Even those who have high hopes that will find a cure in our lifetime admit that it will be a very hard process and will require us to change direction. For that purpose, we must demand that the foundations and the research labs define a Practical Cure and set a date to aim for. There is little reason to hope that current methods, where money gets spread in different areas, will bring about success. Many have been discouraged by the lack of results in the search for a cure and we need to bring them back on board and give them a reason to have hope again.
It begins with each and every person looking to make a difference – the first step is to join the community and show your support in the united cause for a type 1 diabetes cure.
