Over the past couple of weeks we have published a number of reports that examine how the four major diabetes foundations in our coverage universe (the ADA, DRIF, JDRF, and Joslin) spend donor contributions.  Our reports reveal that each organization allocates its funds to a variety of different areas.   The JDCA believes that a greater focus on Practical Cure research could accelerate progress toward that goal.

As we examine spending allocations it is important to take a look back at the Mission Statements for each of the organizations to remind ourselves what priorities have been set.  It’s a good idea to revisit our “Charitable Organization Mission Statements” report that we published last July.

As the title suggests, this report takes a closer look at the mission statements for each charity and the prominence that a cure is given in each organization’s goals.

  • Although not apparent from their mission statements, both the ADA and Joslin have a dual focus on type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • None of the mission statements focus exclusively on a cure, except for the DRIF’s

Donors who contribute with the idea of supporting type 1 cure research should consider stipulating this intention in their giving to ensure that their support is directed to type 1 cure efforts.
