Why you should go
Bailey Adkins, a 12-year-old from Newton with Type 1 diabetes, will attend the 2011 Walk to Cure Diabetes Oct. 1 in Kansas City, Mo., and he is raising funds to support that effort. Community members are invited to attend a fund-raising event Saturday at the Newton Wal-Mart. There will be food, live DJ music by Musical Reflections and a raffle for a Traeger grill.
Funds raised will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The foundation supports projects like the development of “smart insulin,” which would help control a patient’s blood sugar with just one injection a day.

Three event highlights
1 Learn. The goal of this event is to raise awareness about juvenile diabetes and to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

2 Meet those who have it. Have a chance to talk to Bailey Adkins, who lives with Type 1 diabetes. He is one of several children in Harvey County who deal with this life-changing disease every day.

3 Support the cause. For a donation to JDRF, enjoy grilled hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chips, pop and homemade cookies.
