Sometimes when we talk about all the various aspects associated with advocating for a type 1 diabetes cure we forget to mention the very real stories behind the disease – the people that are especially having a hard time with it yet are pushing for a cure.
One such story was in the Star Tribune – written on behalf of a woman with diabetes who has suffered through some major complications, but is now participating in the JDRF Walk for a Cure campaign with her two young daughters she adopted.
It is a simple yet touching story, and puts things into perspective. It touches on two very important points that are at the center of what the JDCA is all about. First of all, just reading that article, you can definitely understand that this family is serious about fighting for a cure. Not for other treatments, not simple observations, but specifically the cause for a cure for type 1 diabetes – which is what most people who participate in these fundraisers pay money for. Yet as we all know, despite their efforts, and despite their hopes, most of that earnest money does not get used for a Practical Cure.
Another important point is that, besides simply supporting the cause, we need to do something about it. We need to be active. If people donate towards these charities, they must let them know WHY they are donating – they must stipulate that the money be used towards cure research. If the fundraisers receive many of these stipulations, they will see this is an issue they need to address – and they will listen to our cause.
